Es la figura más característica de los belenes de Catalunya y empieza a ser conocida poco a poco en todo el mundo. Presenta muy variadas tipologías: guardias civiles, reyes magos, papa noel, monjas, pastores, jugadores del Barça o el Espanyol, brujas, negros, legionarios romanos o bomberos, todos ellos realizando la misma acción defecadora. En general se le suele situar en una zona alejada del pesebre, detrás de un arbusto, por ejemplo. Tradicionalmente se contruían en arcilla, material muy frágil pero últimamente ya empiezan a verse versiones en plástico, más aptas para decorar la casa graciosamente todo el año sin miedo a que se rompa. Los Caganers aparecen ya en los pesebres catalanes a finales del siglo XVII, aunque no se hicieron populares hasta el XIX. ¿Su significado? Muy sencillo: con su abono enriquecen la tierra y proporcionan prosperidad para el año siguiente. Además, dicen mucho del sentido del humor escatológico que tienen los catalanes. Se podría decir que, después de Sant Jordi, el caganer es la figura más emblemática de la mitología popular catalana.
